The basics
Strong Research
Strong Research
Melatonin, a hormone made in the brain, affects sleep and wake cycles. It's naturally produced in the absence of light, which means that the body's internal clock typicaly determines the amount of melatonin produced. Light (natural or artificial) can affect how much melatonin the body produces. Shorter days can alter the rhythm of melatonin production, causing less restful sleep. Age also decreases melatonin production.

Helps reduce the effects of jet lag

Multiple placebo-controlled studies support melatonin’s impact on reducing the effects of jet lag in subjects crossing multiple time zones. This is in part due to melatonin's ability to regulate the body's circadian rhythm. Authoritative bodies in Europe and Canada have also established melatonin's ability to reduce the effects of jet lag.*

Supports quality sleep

Two recent studies suggest that melatonin supports sleep quality and faster sleep onset, as well as improved morning alertness. A 2007 randomized, double blind, and placebo-controlled study of 170 people found significantly improved sleep quality and morning alertness without withdrawal symptoms within the melatonin treatment group. A randomized 2009 study found that a melatonin treatment group had shorter sleep onset latency and an improvement in sleep quality.*
